Te Ara Whanui School sought an architectural design solution that creates a nurturing, well-structured environment for first-year learners while enriching community connections and fostering a genuine sense of belonging.
The project features four interconnected teaching blocks that form a balanced educational campus. These blocks house three modern teaching spaces, an integrated administration area, dedicated toilet facilities, and breakout zones—designed to support both structured learning and collaborative engagement.
The interconnected blocks are arranged to form a fluid campus layout, guiding students through progressive learning spaces that symbolically represent their journey of growth. The design creates a seamless integration between structured classrooms and communal areas, ensuring that the built environment actively contributes to a sense of community and belonging.
Three versatile teaching spaces are crafted with flexibility in mind. Expansive glazing and open layouts maximise natural light and visually connect indoor learning with the outdoors, fostering an environment that promotes innovation and a strong connection to the surroundings.
A centralised administration area, along with dedicated toilet facilities and breakout zones, enhances the functionality of the learning environment. With a focus on energy efficiency, durability, and modular construction techniques, the design minimises on-site disruption and ensures long-term adaptability to the evolving needs of the school. By collaborating closely with educators and key stakeholders, Studio One has delivered an architectural design that not only supports academic growth but also enriches our community, connects people with the built environment, and cultivates a welcoming sense of belonging for all.
